THE USE OF STANDARD STOCKSTILL ON CATTLE

Based on the following estimated statistics:

It is over 25 years since the release of the first Stockstills,
More than fourteen thousand units have been sold world wide,
If we conservatively allow for a third of those units in use each year,
An average annual quota between 20 and 100,000 head of cattle,

- it may well be that since its invention, Stockstills have been used to restrain some billions of head!

This figure of course can not be accurately determined but suffice to say, field trials have been extensive. Side effects & problems would have shown up by now.

With this wealth of experience in mind, the following statements are made:
There is no reason, welfare or practically speaking why Stockstill shouldn't be used on every beast, quiet or wild.
Stockstill provides humane & effective restraint for many routine procedures.
Stockstill safely restrains all cattle from young calves to grown bulls.
The correct use of Stockstill represents a welfare advantage to the animal.
The correct use of Stockstill may be regarded as safe for both animal & operator.
There are no lasting side effects known.
There are no chemical residues.
The restraint may be ceased at any time if required by switching the unit off.
Stockstill may be used in conjunction with anaesthetics.
Operation is straight forward.

Detailed instructions are supplied with the unit.
Basic procedural considerations only are supplied here:

Preliminary:
You must restrain the beast somewhat to allow the connection of a minimum of two electrodes.
In most cases, one of these will be placed at the front of the animal, whilst the other will be placed
at the rear of the animal. The aim is to try to get the current to travel along part or all of the spinal region.

Rear electrode ( Tail ):
Use 1 needle clamp, pushing the entire needle under the skin under the butt of the tail, tending to be slightly along the tail rather than close to the anus. (lift the tail & push horizontally from the side).

Front electrode ( Mouth ):
Use 1 mouth clamp clipped on the side of the top lip, at the back of the mouth.

Operation and Adjustment:
Preset the levels, if anything erring on the high side.
Switch on as soon as the electrodes are attached.
Having achieved a good locked up condition, adjust the current down, allowing the animal to relax a bit, and thereby allowing laboured regular breathing to commence.
If you go down below this level, the animal will loosen up and be obviously mobile again.
In this situation, increase the current to once again gain control.
Provided the laboured breathing remains strong and regular, you may adjust the current up or down to suit the operation. eg. up a bit to gain good control of the head during dehorning, or down a bit to relax the muscles to bend the neck, lift feet etc.

Release:
Remove the electrodes from the animal with current still on to make it easier to reach them.
They are safe to hold in the hands, and the Stockstill can be turned off later.
Turn the current off, then remove the electrodes. The animal will be immediately mobile, so caution will be needed.
